Herbst in England || Autumn in England

Bye bye, Maxiröcke || Bye bye, maxi skirts

I still have not got a chance to get a new camera ... which perhaps is not that bad after all, because it forces me to recycle pictures I took months ago but never got around posting. Like these ones which were taken ... in April.

It won't probably be before April next year that you'll see me wearing maxi skirts (or dresses) again. The weather here is so unpredictable and the last thing I'd want is ruining my skirts by dragging them through the mix of rain water and half-rotten leaves that is so characteristic for the third season in this country. Aaaah, autumn in England, isn't it lovely?  :/

Snif snif.

God, I loved these shoes. I wore them for years even though they were really worn-out (that word always makes me think of this song <3 ) at the end. HAD to throw them away now. Snif snif.

Why I wear a white (instead of a red) poppy

"Remembrance is good. But peace is better."

Every year in early November, they are back. The red poppies. On coat collars, shirt pockets, front bumpers. Worn by news presenters, politicians, teachers, the guy in the grocery store around the corner. They sell them in town, at the town hall - and at my daughter's school. You see them on huge ads in the city centre, on TV, on the front page of some of the country's major newspapers. Poppies everywhere.

Red poppies are worn in the days leading to Remembrance Day which is celebrated on 11 November. They are worn to remember the victims of war, the soldiers who have given their lives in the line of duty. Now I feel very sympathetic to every victim of war - and yes, that includes soldiers who have been injured or lost their lives fighting. I feel with them and their loved ones - even if no-one forced them to put themselves at such risk. I feel with them, because their pain is real, and a human is a human.

But I will not express my solidarity with soldiers who are fighting wars in countries I am not sure they should even be in. I will not donate for soldiers who should be taken care of by the government that made the decision to send them to these countries in the first place. I will not speak of them as "war heroes" - reality is so much more complex. I also feel that by ostentatiously remembering the soldiers, we don't give sufficient space for their victims, for the hundreds, thousands, millions of civilians that suffer from the violent conflicts they did not chose to be part of.

That is why this year I am wearing a white poppy. A white poppy that stands for peace, non-violence and for asking critical questions. In the hope that one day we will not have to remember. Or as one of the people who have asked me about the white poppy on my coat collar said: "Remembrance is good. But peace is better." (For more detailed explanations of why some prefer white poppies over the red ones, see these texts by Assed Baig, Lindsey German and Madeleine Fry.)

Now getting hold of a white poppy is not as easy as that. You get red poppies pretty much everywhere, but there is only a limited number of organisations that sell white poppies. The Peace Pledge Union is one of them. You can also buy them on Ebay. I purchased one from the Stop the War coalition. And, as I was not sure how long it would take for the white poppy to arrive, I made my own (using a red poppy I had gotten for free).

Ohrringe mit Hijab tragen || Wearing earrings with hijab

.
Eine persönliche Geschichte und ein paar Gedanken
A personal story and some thoughts

Heute habe ich seit langem wieder Ohrringe getragen.

Today, after a long time, I wore earrings again.

One thing I started to really miss a couple of years after starting to wear hijab was wearing earrings. Big boho chic style earrings (like these here or those). But wearing earrings with hijab is not possible. You cannot cover your hair, neck and ears and wear (big) earrings ... I thought. Until I came across a video by Amenakin. In which she explained how it can be done

Boy was I excited! I could wear earrings! With hijab!! And I did. Until I started to have doubts about it. Wasn't hijab about avoiding attention, was it not about covering your beauty? So how did wearing earrings fit in with this? I thought about it for some time, heard (and read) different people's opinions and came to the conclusion that for me, in the context I lived in, it was ok.

I wore earrings with hijab almost every day for a couple of months - until I stopped because I just could not be bothered any more having to constantly check and pull down my hijab to make sure no strand of hair had escaped since I last checked - a minute ago...

I don't really wear earrings with hijab any more, but not because I believe it is not permitted in Islam. To me, hijab is, amongst others, about trying to avoid attention (of the man-woman, sexual kind) and that very much depends on the cultural context you find yourself in. Intentions are, of course, important, too - and that is something I have no doubt about: Wearing earrings to me does not have anything to do with trying to garner any man's attention - but it's about feeling beautiful, empowered and strong.

(Sorry for the pathetic picture quality - my camera is broken so for the time being I have to make do with my phone camera...)

Kein Engel || No angel

"Stop hating on yourself for not being perfect. If God wanted perfection, He would have made you an angel."

Herbst: Strickkleider || Autumn: Knitted dresses

Yaaay, I'm back! I have finally Internet at home again ... blogging from public computers just doesn't work ... for me.

In the mean time, autumn has arrived ... which means it is time for knitted dresses again! I love them, they keep you warm, look nice and are so hijab-friendly. Sometimes it takes some time to find one that is actually long enough, but if you know where to look for them (Esprit, for example, does some really nice ones) it is not too difficult to find a decent knitted dress. Provided that you care for them properly (hand wash!!), they will last you a long time.

I quite like these two, but you will find many more (in a variety of colours) on the Esprit website.
