Hijabi Cool ☀

Ich habe den letzten Monat als Gastwissenschaftlerin in den USA verbracht. Ich kannte nicht viele Muslime dort, also bin ich, als ich Farhana eines Tages auf dem Campus gesehen habe, hinter her gerannt und sie mit einem euphorischen 'salam' begrüßt... Sie hat mir den Islamischen Gebetsraum gezeigt, und als ich sie ein paar Wochen später beim Freitagsgebet getroffen habe, hat mir ihr Outfit so gut gefallen, dass wir vor dem Gebetsraum Outfit-Bilder gemacht haben...

I spent last month as a visiting researcher in the US. I didn't know many Muslims there, so when I saw Farhana on campus one day, I ran after her and greeted her with an excited 'salam'... She showed me around the Islamic prayer hall, and when I met her again at Friday prayers a few weeks later, I loved her outfit so much that we ended up taking outfit pictures outside the prayer hall...

Das hier sind alte Bilder (von letztem Mai), aber sie gefallen mir immer noch ziemlich gut. Jetzt muss es nur noch endlich wieder warm genug sein, Sommerkleider zu tragen.

These are old pictures (from last May), but looking back, I really like this outfit. Can't wait till it's warm enough to wear summer clothes again.

Sri Lanka: die pinke Tunika || Sri Lanka: the pink tunic

Ich habe mich gerade durch alte Outfit-Bildern geklickt, die ich einfach noch nicht geschafft habe, zu posten, als ich auf diesen Ordner mit Bildern aus Sri Lanka gestoßen bin. Wenn ihr meinem Blog seit einer Weile folgt, werdet ihr wissen, dass ich Ende 2014 für 10 Tage nach Sri Lanka gereist bin, um eine Freundin zu besuchen und zu sehen, ob es möglich sein würde, dort meine Forschung zu betreiben. Ich habe einige Outfit-Bildern in Sri Lanka gemacht, von mir (1 - 2 - 3), meiner Freundin Ines (1 - 2), ihrer Cousine Shahina (1) und einem Mann auf der Straße (1). 

I was just going through old outfit pictures that I haven't got around posting yet, when I came across this folder with pictures from Sri Lanka. If you have been following my blog for a while, you will know that I went to Sri Lanka for 10 days at the end of 2014, to visit a friend and to see if it was going to be possible to conduct my research there. I took quite a few outfit pictures while in Sri Lanka, of myself (1 - 2 - 3), my friend Ines (1 - 2), her cousin Shahina (1) and a stranger on the street (1). 

Diese Bilder hier sind von einem Outfit, das Ines getragen hat, als wir Brunch in dem alten, den Ozean überschauenden Mount Lavinia-Hotel im Kolonialstil hatten. Die Aussicht war fantastisch, das Hotel wunderschön und das Essen superlecker - zweimal bin ich zurück zum Büffet gegangen!

These pictures here are an outfit Ines wore when we went to have brunch at the old colonial-style Mount Lavinia Hotel overlooking the ocean. The views were fantastic, the hotel beautiful and the food delicious - I went for thirds!

Herbst || Autumn

 

Jetzt ist es wirklich Herbst. Es ist zwar noch relativ mild, und nicht so kalt, dass man einen Wintermantel tragen müsste, aber um ganz ohne Jacke aus dem Haus zu gehen, ist es schon zu kalt. Das ist die Zeit, in der ich meinen Oversize-Cardigan heraushole. Die Bilder hier sind noch von Anfang des Jahres, aber ich trage zurzeit ähnliche Outfits. Der Cardigan (ich habe ihn von New Look) ist einfach perfekt für den Frühling, Herbst und nicht ganz so kalte Wintertage.

It really is autumn now. It's still relatively mild, and not so cold that you need to wear a winter coat, but it'd be too cold to leave the house without at least a light jacket. That's when I get my oversized cardigan out. These pictures were actually taken some time at the beginning of the year, but I wear similar outfits at the moment. That cardigan (I got it from New Look) is simply perfect for spring, autumn and winter days that are not too cold.

Der letzte Tag des Ramadan || Last day of Ramadan

Heute ist der letzte Tag des Ramadan. Der Monat wird mir fehlen, aber das Fasten war so hart (19 Stunden!), dass ich mich jetzt auch richtig auf Eid freue. Das ist ein Outfit, dass ich vor einigen Tagen getragen habe, mit der Kette vom letzten Blogpost.

Today is the last day of Ramadan. I will miss it, but the fasting was so hard (19 hours!) that I am also really looking forward to Eid. This is an outfit I wore a few days ago, with the necklace from the last post.

Und das ist hier ist einer meiner liebsten Nashids zurzeit, wir haben es zurzeit so ziemlich nonstop im Hintergrund laufen... 

And this is currently one of my favourite nashids, we've been pretty much listening to it non-stop in the last months...

Sommer im Mai || Summer in May

Wir hatten dieses Jahr einen ziemlich kalten (und verregneten) Frühling in England. Ich hätte kaum happier sein können, als es letzte Woche endlich warm (und sonnig) wurde. Von Mittwoch letzte Woche bis gestern war das Wetter einfach nur richtig schön, 19, 21, dann 24°C und Sonne jeden Tag. Sommer im Mai! Und das ist mein Outfit vom ersten Tag, an dem es richtig warm war.

We had quite a cold (and rainy) spring in England this year, so you can imagine my excitement when all of a sudden it got warm (and sunny) last week. From Wednesday last week till yesterday, the weather was simply beautiful! 19, 21, then 24°C and sunshine every single day. Summer in May!And tThis is what I wore on the first day it was really warm.

Dunkellila + limettengrün || Dark purple + lime green

Das ist ein Outfit, das ich vor ein paar Monaten (im Februar, glaube ich), als mein Mann und ich ins Theater gegangen sind (ja, ich bin LIMETTENGRÜNEN Turnschuhen ins Theater, he he). Die Kette, Jeans und Tasche hab ich alle aus Charity-Shops, und das Kleid und Kopftuch waren beide reduziert als ich sie gekauft habe. Kleider, die die gefallen und die gut an dir aussehen, müssen nicht teuer sein.

This is an outfit I wore a couple of months ago (I think, it was February) when husband and I went to the theatre (yes, I wore LIME GREEN sneakers to the theatre, he he). The necklace, jeans and purse are all from charity shops, and the dress and headscarf were both reduced when I bought them. Clothes that you like and that look good on you don't need to be expensive.

Frühling, bitte! || Spring, please!

Es ist schon April, aber immer noch so kalt... Dieses Bild meiner Freundin Rania habe ich im Winter gemacht, die Temperaturen haben sich seit dem nicht wirklich geändert. Wir hatten den einen oder anderen Tag von sieht-aus-und-fühlt-sich-an-wie-Frühling, aber das war's dann auch schon so ziemlich. Ich will Frühling, ich will Sonne!

It's already April but still so cold... This picture of my friend Rania was taken in the winter, but the temperatures have not changed much since. We've had the odd day of looks-and-feels-like-spring, but that's pretty much been it. I want spring, I want sun!

Das ist Harry. Sie arbeitet im Bereich Geschlechtergleichstellung für eine englische Studierendenvertretung. Ich habe sie diesen Winter auf einer Konferenz in Sheffield kennen gelernt. Ihr Outfit ist mir sofort aufgefallen, der Retro-Look hat mir gut gefallen. Und bunte Handtaschen? Sind immer gut! :D <3

Stylische Akademiker (und so) || Stylish academics (and this sort of stuff)

Ich <3 es, Wissenschaftlerin zu sein. Weil ich Forschung betreiben, sich Wissen aneignen und Wissen produzieren extrem befriedigend fine (hört sich das nerd-artig an?! :D ). Ich <3 auch, dass der Dresscode so sehr viel relaxter als in vielen anderen beruflichen Feldern ist. "Wir sind schlau und haben Grips und stehen total über übertrieben formellen Dresscodes." Leider ist die andere Seite der Story, dass viele Leute im akademischen Bereich auf Wissenschaftler, die sich für Mode interessieren und gerne gut kleiden, herabsehen, vor allem, wenn es Frauen sind, aber glücklicherweise sind mir solche Meinungen (bisher) noch nicht viel über den Weg gekommen. In der Zwischenzeit trage ich schöne Kleider ... weil sie mir gefallen und weil ich selbstbewusster bin, wenn ich Kleider trage, in denen ich mich gut fühle. Mein persönliches "Rezept" für Mode-Erfolg ;) im akademischen Kontext ist: trage Kleider, die dir gefallen und in denen du dich wohlfühlst, und hebe dir Eperimente für andere Momente auf. Das Outfit hier haben ich vor kurzem zu einem Vortrag, den ich gegeben habe, getragen; es erfüllt für mich alle diese Punkte:

I <3 being an academic. Because I find doing research, gaining and producing knowledge incredibly rewarding. I also <3 that the dress code is so much more relaxed than in many other professional contexts. "We are smart, we are brains, we are beyond overly formal dress codes." Unfortunately, the other side of the story is some people in academia looking down on academics who are interested in fashion and enjoy dressing well, especially if they are women, but luckily I have not come across these views a lot (yet). In the meantime, I'll wear nice clothes ... because I find them beautiful and because I feel more confident when I wear clothes I feel good in. Simple as that. My personal recipe for fashion success ;) in an academic context is: wear something you like and that you feel confident in, and leave experiments for some other time. This is what I wore to a recent talk I gave, and it ticks all these boxes for me.

Die französische Kopftuchträgerin || The French hijabi

Sakina kommt aus Frankreich. Sie studiert zurzeit in Großbritannien, aber wird im Sommer wieder zurück nach Paris gehen. Sie studiert Jura und will Anwältin werden. Ich habe auch in Frankreich studiert (vor ein paar Jahren...), und wir sind uns einig darin, dass man als Muslim in Großbritannien besser aufgehoben ist. Sorry, Frankreich, das ist einfach so. Du kannst dafür Mode besser. Wie Sakina auf diesen Bildern zeigt... ;) 

Sakina is from France. She currently studies in the UK, but will go back to Paris in the summer. She studies law and wants to become a lawyer one day. I studied in France, too (a few years ago...), and we both agree that as a Muslim, life is better in the UK. Sorry, France, but that's just what it is. You're better in terms of style so, as Sakina demonstrates in these pictures... ;)
