Event details

“God loves those who are fair and just.” Qur’an [49:9]

In today’s modern, global market what does it mean to be “fair and just” when purchasing our every day and luxury items? How can we be certain that the products we buy and the companies we support have not harmed another adult, child, animal or the environment in the manufacturing process? With Fair Trade fortnight only four weeks away, we explore the meaning of the phrase “Fair Trade”, the current benefits and problems for both producers and consumers of ethical trade products, and the complex issues faced by all of us in following an Islamic ideal to create a more fair and just world.

The speakers

Mohammad Zaman has a BA in Islamic and Religious Studies from the University of Wales, Lampeter and an MSc in Development and Security from the University of Bristol. Currently he is the campaigns officer at MADE in Europe working with young Muslims in the UK to empower them to play an active leadership role alongside their brothers and sisters of other faiths and none to champion universal economic justice and social well-being. He is also in charge of running MADE in Europe’s Fair Trade in Islam campaign.

Rachel Powell developed her interest and awareness of “Fair Trade” while studying Fashion Design at Ravensbourne College, London and Cleveland College of Art Design. A specialist in natural dyes and eco fibres, since graduating her work has been selected for exhibitions across the UK and overseas at the International Symposium on Natural Dyes 2011. She has a passion for tracking down unique ethical textile ingredients and, through her business (Rachel Powell Ltd), she works with clients around the world.

David Handley is chairman of the lobbying group Farmers For Action (FFA) www.farmersforaction.org. He has made several media appearances and featured in the Channel 4 documentaries Milk Wars (highlighting dairy farmers’ plight with low milk prices), and 6 Days That Shook Britain (which followed his involvement in the 2000 fuel protests). David has twice been voted Farmers Weekly Personality of the Year, received the 2005 Dairy Industry Award, and the 2007 RABDF Princess Royal Award for his services to the industry.
