Eid-Outfit II || Eid outfit II

Letzte Eid-Tag, letzter Eid-Outfit-Post.

Kopftuch oder Arbeit || Head scarf or work

Hoffentlich.

Street Style: Bath

Gelb-braune Streifen und ein Hijab mit Schmetterlingen
Yellow-brown stripes and a hijab with butterflies

I've already written about how difficult it is to get an ok from hijabis (who don't know me personally) to take their picture. The question "would you mind me taking a picture of you?" is usually followed by the explanation "it's for my hijab blog" and my repeatedly affirming that they will remain anonymous, that I upload pictures of myself to the blog, too, that it's about showing how beautiful and diverse hijab can be (= good cause!)... Approximately 30 minutes later (...) I might get their permission to take a picture ... or not.

So you can imagine my surprise when these two
answered in the affirmative (and with a big smile)
to my question if I could take their picture.

I was so happy I forgot to ask them where they were from.

How to be beautiful when you don't feel like it

Wir kennen sie alle, diese Tage. An denen man sich unwohl in der eigenen Haut fühlt, Augenringe, schon wieder zwei Kilo zugenommen, bad hair day, das Kopftuch sitzt schief. Aaaaaaargh!!

We all know them, those days. When you just don't feel good in your own skin, dark circles around your eyes, gained another two kilos, bad hair day, the head scarf doesn't stay in place. Aaaaaaaargh!!

What to do? a) Go straight back to bed, pull blanket over head and hope that tomorrow everything will be better. b) Carry on with your day and feel miserable. c) Get rid of negative thoughts and remember HOW BEAUTIFUL you are.

Sounds like complete nonsense? No! How you feel does, to a large extent, not only depend on what you are but also on ho you see yourself. Hey, that's something they teach you in the average psychology class at your local community education centre. I think.

American blogger Ashley has come up with a list of five tipps on how to feel good and beautiful on precisely these kind of days. She suggests to accept compliments, to laugh a lot (ok, her second point is VERY American...), to surround yourself with true friends, to go out, to see yourself through your children's eyes (well, if you have some, of course). You'll find the full list here.

Ich würde dem noch hinzufügen: || I would add the following:

- - - Trage Kleider, in denen du dich wohl fühlst. Keine Experimente an solchen Tagen.

- - - Wear clothes you feel good in. No experiments on those kind of days. I guess it is a good idea to have a reliable outfit in mind, an outfit you feel beautiful in, that you can just throw on in the morning without having to think about it or to try out a million different options first.

- - - Denke an Momente, in denen du dich schön, gut, selbstbewusst gefühlt hast.

- - - Think about moments when you felt beautiful, good, confident. At a party, a date, a day at work or at uni?

- - - Erinnere dich daran, was wirklich wichtig ist. Dieser Spruch drückt das sehr schön aus: "I used to complain that I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet"...

- - - Remind yourself of what is really important. This saying expresses this very beautifully: "I used to complain that I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet"... Yeah, you might not look like Kate Moss - but does that really make you less happy?

Burgunderfarbener Maxirock || Burgundy maxi skirt

Ha. So a couple a days ago I was doubting it would be easy to find a burgundy maxi skirt. Who do I run into in Bath a couple of days later? Yes, this young woman - in a burgundy maxi skirt. And it looks nice, doesn't it?

At second sight, the quality doesn't seem like anything to write home about, but I like what she made out of it.

Vintage in Birmingham

Birmingham is like London, it's as busy, as multicultural
- just smaller.

Having said that, perhaps it is even a bit more multicultural than London. I have never seen as many passersby in a saree or shalwar kammeez on Oxford Street in London as I have in the city centre of Birmingham.

While strolling through the pedestrian precinct in the city centre, we came across a second hand market in a vacant shop where for 5 GBP you could fill a plastic bag with vintage clothes. Wow. It was like heaven for a flea market freak...

Ausbeute: 9 Röcke, 7 Schals, 5 Langarmhemden, 4 Kleider, 3 Hüte, 2 Kurzarmblusen, 1 Hose, 1 Pullunder, 1 Strickjacke, 1 Jacke, 1 Kinderhemd, 1 Kinderpulli...

I left with 9 skirts, 7 scarves, 5 long sleeve shirts, 4 dresses, 3 hats, 2 short sleeve shirts, 1 pair of trousers, 1 sweater vest, 1 cardigan, 1 jacket, 1 kids shirt, 1 kids sweater...

...und das alles für 5 GBP! || ...and all that for 5 GBP!

Auch haben wollen? Ab nach Birmingham! Bis zum 23. Dezember ist der Markt noch dort. Mehr Infos auf Facebook oder der Webseite der Veranstalter, Harper and Lewis Vintage.

Sounds good? Well, head to Birmingham! The market is still going to be there till 23 December. More infos on Facebook or the website of the organisers, Harper and Lewis Vintage.

Also: viel Spaß beim Shoppen - aber guckt genau hin!

The clothes I found were in a good condition but there were also quite a few items with stains that didn't look as if they could get washed out or that had holes in it. So: enjoy but check the clothes carefully!

Drei Arten von "modesty" || Three forms of modesty

I am usually not a big fan of these videos on Islam that you find on Youtube, but this lecture on modesty was delivered in such a great way that I wanted to share it. I do not agree with everything AbdelRahman Murphy, the speaker, says but I did like the idea of speaking of three different levels of modesty. There are too many people out there who make you believe that modesty was exclusively about clothes as if simply wearing a head scarf made you modest.

Friday and Saturday we spent in Liverpool.
Port city, Beatles city, city up North...

|| I took quite a few pictures and will post some more on my other blog.

Ich trug bequeme Klamotten: graues Strickkleid,
dunkelblaue Jeans und das magentafarbene Lieblingtuch. ||

dark blue jeans and the favourite magenta scarf.

St Albans

Last weekend we went to St Albans in the North of London for the day. I hadn't been outside of London for some time and had a hard time believing...

...was für eine Idylle wir vorfanden. ||
...that places as idyllic as this still existed.

Das Wetter war auch schön... || The weather was nice, too...

|| ...but it was not really warm any more, so a jacket was a must. Autumn has finally arrived, no doubt.

|| I wore: my new favourite scarf, made from cotton, bought at fat face (what a stupid name for a brand) in Stratford. It was quite expensive (18 GBP), but that's something we've already discussed, right?

I own two winter jackets. One magenta coat that my mother bought for me four years ago. It's a beautiful winter coat, the only problem is that the colour does not really go that well with everything. That's why two years ago I bought this jacket in a charity shop in London. For 3 GBP. You can't see the red cardigan I wear underneath.

St Albans was really beautiful. One of these places where you can literally feel the past (gaaah, does this sound too emo?). On the field where we were standing here you still see the remains of a Roman settlement, in the background you can distinguish the medieval cathedral. When it was constructed locals knocked off parts of the Roman ruins to reuse the stones. An amazing place!

Herbsttrends || Autumn trends

As soon as the summer was over, the new autumn trends were announced. So this year, it was going to be leather, autumn colours such as burgundy, baroque, small prints. These kind of seasonal trends are something I feel a bit ambivalent about (to say the least). Getting inspired by something new is certainly not a bad thing, but I simply can't get my head around how some people buy more and more new clothes every season just because it's the new trend.

Well, but maybe you need a new pair of trousers anyway. Or a jacket. And thus you buy them in nice colours that are, on top of being pretty, currently in.

In that case, you could do it like this young woman:

Dünnes Leinenhemd in Chambray-Optik,
bequeme Chinohosen, Jersey-Schal
Light linen shirt (chambray look), comfy chino trousers, jersey scarf

Herbsttrend I: die burgunderfarbene Hose ||
Autum trend I: burgundy trousers

Herbsttrend II: Leder || Autumn trend II: leather

|| I don't like black leather. Looks hardly good on anyone. Colourful leather is a no no, too. Except for tan leather. How nice does this tan leather jacket look?

|| And a new leather jacket is actually something worth spending some money on. And yes, a real leather jacket might be a bit pricier, but you could balance it out easily by not mindlessly splurging on some silly seasonal trend the next time.

Hm, and is it hijabifiable, this outfit? Of course, it is! Wear a long skirt instead of the trousers or a knee-length tunic instead of the shirt, the scarf around the head instead of the neck - ready. I'm not sure whether you'd find any burgundy skirt, but you could as well wear a burgundy shirt over a long denim skirt.

Originell || Original

At my grandmother's, old photographies in golden frames stand on wooden commodes covered with white doilies. I would have never come up with the idea of actually putting one of these little pictures around my neck ... but then I'm not a hip London artist either.

Seen: on the tube, London, September 2012.

Worn: by a friendly young woman in her thirties or forties.

Rather unusual, isn't it?

Kleider für die, die keine haben || Clothes for those who don't have any

Eine indisches Projekt zur Bekämpfung der Kleidungsnot
vieler bedürftiger Dorfbewohner ||
An Indian project working on tackling the lack of clothing amongst many needy villagers

I came across this inspiring article on an Indian initiative to cloth the poor a couple of days ago. The Indian NGO Goonj was founded in 1998 and runs, amongst others, a "cloth for work" programme. The initiative aims at tackling what they call the "clothing divide". Want to know more? You'll find the article here. In a hurry? Well, you are lucky because I went through the article and picked some of the most important parts for you:

"One of the most glaring oversights in the field of development is the lack of attention to clothing. Countless organizations work on food, energy, education, health care, economic opportunity — but beyond disaster relief efforts, you hear little about the need for clothes."

"For very poor people, clothing is shelter. 'In earthquakes, the shake kills people; in a tsunami, the water kills people; but in winter, the cold does not kill people. It’s the lack of proper clothing,' [...] 'Why don’t we consider lack of clothing a disaster?'"

"Many Indians possess only one or two items of clothing [...]. A woman with one sari must conceal herself while it dries after washing. And many women stay hidden indoors during their menstrual cycles because of orthodox religious beliefs and because they have no proper undergarments and only a piece of cloth to serve as a sanitary napkin."

"It is getting middle-class Indians to recognize the tremendous value of material reuse and recycling in the context of their country’s poverty."

The article also points out the inapt approach of many development and aid agencies distributing clothes:

"First, assistance is often distributed in a way that degrades people. [...] Second, contributions of goods are often mindlessly out of touch with people’s needs."

Was könnte anders gemacht werden? || What could be done differently? How does Goonj deal with this problem? Nah, I'm not going to summarize the whole text for you, find out yourself!

Ganz viele... || Loads of...

 ...schöne Muslimas! || ...beautiful Muslimahs!

This week, I attended an event by the Islamic Society of does not matter which university in London. It was a meeting of Muslim female students and alumnas, and since I knew quite a lot of them (and thus they knew I would not do something completely crazy with their photos...), I managed to take a good bunch of pictures. Ready for London Muslim Style, A/W 2012? Here you go!

Perfect autumn colours - and I love the leather shoes and bag!
(And, thinking about it, the jacket is pretty cool, too.)

Black with colours - you can hardly go wrong with this one.
Would have looked nice, too, with a blue or purple head scarf, I think.

A classic combi: black pleated skirt, off-white lace top, black fitted blazer and a beautiful black and white head scarf. Personally, I would probably have chosen a colourful scarf - but I think it was exactly this, the fact that the whole outfit was kept in shades of black and white, that made it look so good.

Faltenrock und Spitzenoberteil - ungewöhnliche (aber geniale!) Kombi: ||
Pleated skirt and lace top - unusual (but awesome-looking) combination:

And she was wearing a nice winter coat, too
(but in white, aargh, so out of question for any toddler's mummy!!)

Shades of purple - and a tailor-made European abayah (will have to ask her where and for how much she got it done, the cut was great)

|| Shades of grey and beige (too bad you can't really see the knitted dress - loved it!)

Power colour burgundy - and a beautiful silk scarf (love the detail!). And the outfit is super easily hijabify-able: long skirt instead of short skirt, scarf around the head - done!

And last, but not least, an almost not autumny but rather summerly looking blue outfit. I like how the skirt is not in the same shade of blue as the head scarf - that could have looked too matchy-matchy. Cobalt blue is not my colour at all - but boy did it look good on her!
